Científicos japoneses detectan un extraño temblor en el fondo de la Tierra

Con ayuda de una estación sismológica, un grupo de investigadores japoneses ha registrado por primera vez un raro temblor en las profundidades de la Tierra. La aparición de este fenómeno fue atribuida a la actividad de una potente tormenta en el norte del océano Atlántico conocida como «bomba meteorológica», según recoge un artículo de Peter Gerstoft y Peter Bromirski para la revista Science, informa EurekAlert!.

Al analizar la actividad microsísmica en la Tierra, los sismólogos solamente podían trazar hasta ahora ondas primarias (ondas P), esas que sienten algunos animales en la antesala de un terremoto. Sin embargo, no podían trazar las más elusivas ondas secundarias (ondas S), esas que los humanos sienten durante la devastadora actividad de los temblores.

Los temblores de baja intensidad llamados microsismos son fenómenos perceptibles en cualquier lugar del mundo, causados por el chapoteo de las olas del océano en la superficie sólida de la Tierra durante las tormentas. Al analizar uno desde el Instituto Nacional de investigaciones para las Ciencias de la Tierra y Prevenciones de Desastres Naturales en Chugoku, Japón Kiwamu Nishida y Ryota Takagi detectaron ondas secundarias.
